With Almeeva, BLWBCK reconnects with a presence that has quietly threaded through the label’s history for over a decade. Since his second EP released in 2012, through collaborative works, parallel projects, features, and mastering duties, his imprint has remained constant, even when unseen. Bound marks a return, but not a repetition. Composed as the original soundtrack for Jean-Armand Bougrelle’s motion picture Bound (2021), this album stands apart from Almeeva’s usual vocabulary. The familiar structures recede, replaced by wide ambient drifts, fragile synth pads, and slow-moving harmonic clouds. The music does not assert itself. It lingers, hovers, and waits, carrying a subdued melancholy that feels closer to breath than to rhythm. The project emerged from a moment of displacement. As the film moves between France and Japan, Almeeva was himself suspended between France and Sweden, caught in the quiet friction of expatriation. That state of in-betweenness seeps into every layer of the soundtrack. There is no arrival here, only the slow erosion of bearings, the soft ache of distance, and the realization that identity becomes clearer only once it starts to slip away. Bound by its own constraints, the music avoids quotation and ornament. There is no borrowed folklore, no exotic surface. Sound is stripped of heritage, reduced to texture and resonance, as if emotion could exist without a language attached to it. Synthesizers swell like low fog, pads dissolve into one another, and time stretches until it feels porous. Composed in 2019 in a small Paris apartment cluttered with aging machines, the soundtrack also carries a private weight. The only acoustic presence is a worn piano, its exhausted keys struggling to speak, exhaling notes like final confessions. An instrument too tired to perform, perfectly suited to a music that does not seek clarity, only truth. Bound is a record of quiet sorrow and restrained tension. Not a statement, but a suspended state. A music that tightens slowly, not to restrain, but to reveal what remains when everything else has been stripped away.
