Even if it wears the dark cloak of the occult and the undiscovered, the 66-minute release from a Toulouse based duo ZENИTH allows for a ray of light to seep in through the dark clouds and into the guitar-based ambient oblivion. Heavily reverbed, often ritual-like (as the title implies), deeply atmospheric, rolling slowly over your head like the slowly coming storm that never hits with its full force, but passes through, while still making a statement with its distant thunders and barely noticeable lightnings. “Ritual” plays like an almost acoustic, more ambiental side of a black metal band. Good stuff for pagan meditation deep in the woods. – Weed Temple

ZENИTH develops large spaces on Ritual. Throughout the album there’s sense of an overcast environment. Deprived of the sun these songs mourn the loss of color. Echoes are a key element in the album ringing out seemingly into eternity. Yet in spite of the distance there’s a sense of hope for much of the album. It is as if Ritual wants to reach the end of that distance to find something encouraging. Hence many of these tracks feel comforting as they wait for the clouds to part making way for the sun to shine through. “Fog” begins it with an angelic approach. Guitars here are a choir singing out to the heavens. On “Moon” things become a bit less bleak moving towards a natural rhythm with the guitars and silence. Things begin to change considerably with the slight stomp of “Glass”. Here wordless vocals emerge as slight percussive elements come in making the entire song feel more human. Post-rock influences spring up on the positively joyful “B&W Road” which begins with a rhythmic pulse before becoming completely free. Elements of this feel reminiscent of ‘Explosions in the Sky’ put through so many filters. Towards the end things become a little darker once more with the nautical “Deepest Song” and the quiet “Holy Ghost”. Each of those tends to go for something quieter, more contemplative. By the absolute end is the finale of “Wind”. On the finale the track appears to neatly summarize all that went before it. A beat begins it and it ends with an absolute rush of sound which crescendos into a satisfying conclusion. Ritual is a comforting warm album. – Beach Slot (7.6/10)

Άλλο ένα σχήμα από τον γαλλικό Νότο, που ερωτοτροπεί με το σκοτάδι. Το εξώφυλλο του ντεμπούτου τους, πέρα από καλαίσθητο, απεικονίζει πιστά το μυσταγωγικό περιεχόμενο του δίσκου. Κιθαριστικά reverb και delay συνθέτουν ένα ομιχλώδες σκηνικό που το λούζει το δυνατό φεγγαρόφως. Η επαναληπτικότητα των θεμάτων λειτουργεί χαλαρωτικά και όχι απωθητικά, καθώς συνευρίσκονται το post rock με την ambient, οι Labradford με τους Hammock. Εκ πρώτης ακροάσεως, στην αρχή ίσως να φαντάζει το υλικό κοινότυπο, αλλά προχωρώντας διαβλέπουμε τον πλούτο του και την αποφυγή της σύνθεσης μιας σκοτεινής μονοτονίας με αποκορύφωμα το τελευταίο κομμάτι του δίσκου “Wind”. Ιδανικό soundtrack για νυχτερινές περιπλανήσεις σε ερημικά δάση ή σε ακόμη πιο ερημικές παραλίες, εκφράζει τον χειμώνα που, καθώς χάνεται, δεν σκορπά πλέον μελαγχολία, αλλά απλώς μια υπόσχεση πως θα ξεχαστεί μέχρι το πέρας του καλοκαιριού. – Against The Silence

Tout d’abord je tiens à remercier du fond du coeur le copier/coller. Oui parce que ZENИTH ce n’est pas forcément évident à écrire. Parenthèse refermée, débutons par ce qui est réellement important. ZENИTH est un duo toulousain tout fraîchement formé, visiblement peu avant le berceau de cette nouvelle année 2013. La formation est jeune, certes, et confronté à ce Ritual il est difficile de ne pas émettre quelques soupçons, en particulier lorsque l’on est de mauvaise foi. En si peu de temps de vie, comment est-il possible de pondre un objet aussi cohérent? Il y a donc deux options. Soit Tony Llados et Guillaume Sauvage se connaissent depuis toujours et ont été éduqués par les mêmes mélodies, les mêmes inspirations. Soit leurs gènes musicaux respectifs étaient faits pour coïncider de la plus parfaite des manières, les uns venant compléter les autres, et réciproquement. Le résultat est maîtrisé, oh putain que oui. Mais ce n’est pas le point le plus important à montrer du doigt. Ritual développe une musique modeste, lancinante, et incontestablement solaire. Les effets sont minimes, faiblement perceptibles sans une écoute au casque, volume bien évidemment amplifié à son paroxysme. Les guitares revêtent ce grain spécifique qui réchauffe lentement les âmes, et fait s’évaporer les rosées matinales (Fog, Moon). Cette lumière est duveteuse, apprivoise nos yeux avec grande courtoisie. Du haut de ses 35 petites minutes, ce disque là maintient l’attention et une fascination immuables, parce qu’il faudra dire les choses telles qu’elles se présentent, la musique de ZENИTH a de la gueule. Sans prétention aucune, conjuguant cordes floutées et voix délicatement filtrées (Glass) aux drones ci et là plus imposants. Parfois plus menaçante, bien plus intense, là où les faisceaux lumineux se font plus aveuglants et paradoxalement d’autant plus beaux (B&W Road). Ritual, ou comment donner une leçon de reverbe sans tomber dans le stéréotype des musiques spatiales. Un premier opus qui en dit long. On attend la suite, qui sera souhaitons le fort, de même acabit. À noter pour clôturer ce blabla: les trois dernières minutes du titre final font très, très très mal. – Have Faith In Sound

[...] Avec Ritual la paire Tony Llados (collaborateur de Saåad) et Guillaume Sauvage nous propose une parenthèse gracieuse, une introspection loin de la jungle urbaine, bâtie autour de lignes de six cordes funambules (rappelant parfois sur “B&W Road” Explosions In the Sky), parsemées de rythmiques discrètes, de voix lointaines et de field recordings. Dès “Fog”, on est happé par le son, la réverbération profonde quelque part entre les travaux de Robin Guthrie ou la facette la plus calme de Barn Owl, avec certes une emphase sur la répétition, mais pas seulement. Il y a chez ZENИTH ce regard constant vers le ciel, quelque chose d’aérien qui confère à ses compositions une certaine apesanteur, leur permettant d’échapper à l’éventuelle monotonie du drone en arrière plan. (“Moon”) [...] les Français se permettent un peu plus sur l’ultime “Wind”, faisant de l’oeil à Henryspenncer, conviant davantage décibels et chants, une manière de ramener l’humain au cœur d’une musique qui pourrait sembler parfois trop abstraite. Nova ekstravaganca i snaga BLWBCK etikete su ZENИTH, lokalci i kompatrioti (Tuluz, Francuska). Njihova skoro samonikla muzika, kao da citira Artura Remboa o načinima na koja sazvežđa šušte, i kroz nju se trude da razumeju i slave Prirodu, valjda su zato i celinu normirali kao Ritual. Šta god da su od muzike i uzora asimilovali, rokirali, simbolizovali i vezivali za lične asocijacije, pokušaj opisa ne olakšava i ne čini bližim ono sto ZENИTH jesu, ali… Badalamentijevi jataci za panteistički špageti vestern; shoegazeri kojima ruke (ot)padaju u kasn(ij)oj fazi entropije; Victorialand (Cocteau Twins) učenici bez glasa i nekoliko slojeva gitare. Ipak! Nema razloga da ovaj dvojac nekog drugog, nekog trećeg dana ne (pod)seti na nešto četvrto. Inicijalni tiraž od nešto kasetnih primeraka je rasprodat skoro brzinom svetlosti, ali ZENИTH bandcamp pored kompletnog streaminga nudi i fraj download (http://znth.bandcamp.com/album/ritual). Dostupno u svakom trenutku, čak i onima bez želje za posedovanjem. Jedan od većih fanova etikete Warren Ellis (Dirty Three, Grinderman, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) se uspavljuje i akumilura ovim i ne libi se da o tome priča i piše. Toulouse duo ZENИTH compose droning, atmospheric ambiance that seems obsessed with the holistic qualities of the natural world; an almost ceremonial procession of empty space, free air and the slow evolution of landscapes. Of course, this kind of introspective sonic exercise requires a specific mindset from the listener, and ideally a clear night sky to look at or an ancient forest to get lost in. In the absence of both, Ritual is an album that simulates such imagery through constant waves of shivering reverb, lots of echo and a calm, deliberate tempo. It’s an album that commands you to listen. Like a lot of modern instrumental music, a multitude of styles are used to create such a stirring mood — the repetitious picked guitars of post-rock, the meandering, thickly layered synths and dissonance of dark ambient and the dimly-lit-hallway aesthetic of avant-garde black metal — but it’s all distributed harmoniously, tied together by the cunning use of field recordings. There’s some vocal flashes to be found too, best on ‘Moon’ and ‘Glass’, but they’re always indecipherable tones that sound more like resigned cries to the wind than an overpowering force. Then there’s the unshakable feeling of waiting. It’s more a hopeful linger than anything, as if the pair are prepared to mournfully hold synth notes through even the darkest layers of smog until they see light again. ‘Moon’ and ‘B&W Road’ in particular carry this aura, despite the dense, feedback-laden layers that make them up. With hope comes despair though, and the sorrowful one-two combo of ‘Deepest Sea’ and ‘Holy Ghost’ elicits the darkest emotions on the album, sweeping you beneath a variety of drones and textures and samples with an unsettling rhythm and solemn disposition. But if there’s to be one defining moment and indicator of ZENИTH’s philosophy, then it’s the fabulous closer ‘Wind’, which serves not only as the most varied and accomplished track on the record, but also as the payoff to all the waiting and star-gazing that comes before. It’s a slow burner, building upon a layer of muddy static with a solitary kick drum that hits with a clocks regularity. Guitar picks join in, then ritualistic vocal chants, then another cautious dip back into the unknown. Unlike before though, this minimalism subsides and instead we’re led into the first real crescendo; a stark, perfect burst of optimism akin to the rising of the sun after a long, cold night. ZENИTH avoid the common pitfalls of boredom and repetition that befalls other post-rock/ambient acts by telling a story through the layering and stripping of sounds and textures to convey a thought cycle. Ritual is the music your subconscious plays on walks home in the dead of night, and the sounds you hear when you can’t sleep. Perhaps it’s a little too subdued for some, but for those who regularly self-reflect, it’s about the most appropriate companion you could ask for. – Isaac Powell for nOted

Heureuse découverte que cet album, mélancolique certes, mais qui touche directement au cœur dès lors qu’on fait l’effort de rentrer dans l’univers dépeint. Jeune projet formé en 2012 par Tony Llados et Guillaume Sauvage, ZENИTH propose un monde perdu dans la brume, une réalité déformée où les notes de guitares douces et en écho vous prennent par la main et vous attirent dans des paysages qu’on semble observer sous un temps pluvieux dans un train silencieux. Il y ressort ce sentiment d’étrangeté, des silhouettes perdues au lointain, encapuchonnées, de répétitions qui n’en sont pas, mélodies faîtes de vapeur perdues dans un brouillard drone, jamais suffocant, jamais facile non plus. Le rituel, lui, est bien présent. On sentira quelques percussions semblant venir de loin, très loin, des voix fantomatiques, vaguement incantatoires, guidant plus qu’elles n’ interpellent. On évite le côté casse-gueule et casse bonbon de titres à rallonge, le duo Toulousain visant davantage l’efficacité d’un instant, d’un fragment. Je vois les peintures de Gaspard David Friedrich, le romantisme Allemand plus qu’un style musical, les feuilles qui tombent des arbres, la lune qui se lève, les branches qui s’agitent mollement face au vent, une goutte d’eau qui effectue inlassablement la même chute. Musique de l’imagination, musique nocturne aussi, “Ritual” est un album qui s’écoute au milieu de la nuit, lumières éteintes, un regard légèrement porté sur la fenêtre, effets garanties… Jamais trop sombres ou effrayants, les titres, volontairement minimalistes, arrivent même à transporter leur auditeur (le titre final “Wind” est à ce titre le parfait exemple). Oh, vous savez bien, cette brève accélération du rythme cardiaque, le souffle qu’on retient de peur de perdre une miette. Il y a de ça dans “Ritual”. Pour un premier album (bien qu’un peu court), y’a de quoi être agréablement surpris. Heureuse et mélancolique découverte donc… Affaire à suivre ! – Claire Obscur
