SAÅAD | Raincoats

BLWBCK004 – Release date : Jun 30th, 2011
Digital | Download

Just two months after the Pink Sabbath release, Saåad is back with a concept EP entitled ‘Raincoats’. The idea was born during a stormy evening in january. Romain was recording ‘Love Is A Rent’ when electricity started to hardly wave. When he listened to the recording, the rain changed into thunder and the tape was strangely undulating, sometimes cracking and clicking. This four songs have been recorded at different times and possess their own alterations.

01. Love Is A Rent
02. She Is Electricity
03. The Frontier
04. Back Pain / pain Back

music by Romain Barbot

The self released ambient drone of ‘Raincoats’ could well be Saaad’s best work to date. The four tracks enclosed were written and recorded at different times between January and June 2011, through the rain and thunderstorms of Toulouse and Paris. French artist Romain Barbot who is Saaad, conjures romantic imagery through the layers of noise, earthy drones and ambience, not to mention the connotations of the track titles.Majestically ‘Love is a Rent’ unravels itself. Coarsing guitar stutters like heavy rain hitting, recorded vocals emerge through the mist, rising and falling phrasing makes for a floating ethereal presence which is simply beautiful. ‘The Frontier’ drones cavernous drones accompanied by what sounds like a chamber choir. Hearing these tracks in a church or cathedral maybe the perfect setting to soak up the size of the sound. Turn up your volume and enjoy.

Beautiful bit of white noise for you here from French drone artist Romain Barbot, aka Saåad. Similar to the all-encompassing tidal waves of noise that Tim Hecker and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma have put out in the last year or so, but with strangely buried and half-forgotten melodies swimming underneath the barrage, kind of like The Caretaker’s recent stunner An Empty Bliss Beyond This World. There’s only one track off the upcoming album available to stream below, but if you click here you can nip over to the Bandcamp page and listen to his previous two releases for free. – ADD VOID
